What The Burned Barns Is About
The body of a young woman is found beside a road under snow in the Haut-Doubs. The investigating judge concludes that someone from the large farm nearby is involved, and finds himself facing Rose, who runs the household. The film is less a murder puzzle than a contest of wills between outside authority and a rural family living by its own rules, with neither side prepared to concede the other anything. Alain Delon plays the judge and Simone Signoret plays Rose. The score is by Jean-Michel Jarre, years before Oxygène.
