What The Cabbie Is About
Daquan likes being a taxi driver, and when he falls for a traffic cop he starts committing every violation he can think of just to be pulled over again. Chang Hwa-Kun and Chen Yi-wen refuse to play this as a straight romantic comedy. They keep breaking the story open with Daquan’s family history, with characters turning to address the camera, and with small essays on why passengers tell a cab driver the things they tell nobody else. Rie Miyazawa plays the policewoman, and the result is one of the odder and more personal Taiwanese films of 2000.
