What The Cheat Is About
Dora is in a coma after a car crash. At her bedside her husband Robert remembers the years they spent together, and then her mother remembers the same years, and the two accounts contradict each other flatly. The woman in the husband’s version is innocent; in the other there is someone who, with her mother, worked him from the start. Yves Allégret’s film is counted among the classics of French noir. The harshness of its portrait of a woman has also earned it a long-running charge of misogyny, and that argument has never really closed. Simone Signoret plays Dora and Bernard Blier plays Robert.
