Michèle Cordoue A André Toffel What The Proud and the Beautiful Is About
A hot coastal town in Mexico. Nellie and her husband are stranded there and the man falls ill and dies within days. She has to stay. Living in the town is a Frenchman named Georges; he was a doctor once and now begs in the street for the price of a drink. In the same days an epidemic starts in the town. Yves Allégret directed the film from a story by Jean-Paul Sartre. Michèle Morgan and Gérard Philipe take the leads. Heat, dust and sickness carry the film's physical weight; it was shot in Mexico. The telling does not offer recovery as a romantic solution; each of the two has to climb out of their own collapse.
