What The Christening Is About
Marcin Wrona’s 2010 Polish drama covers seven days. Michał has everything he ever wanted: a wife, a newborn son, a business of his own. He asks his old friend Janek to be the boy’s godfather, and the invitation turns out to carry a second and colder purpose. Michał got out of a criminal organisation by informing on the man who ran it, and he knows the bill is about to come due. Most of the film is the slow work of one man trying to hand his family over to another before that happens, and of Janek gradually understanding what he has agreed to. It took several prizes at Gdynia. Wrona died in 2015, in Gdynia, during the festival screening of his film Demon.
