What The Christmas Tango Is About
Greece under the junta in the 1970s, in an isolated army camp. A young lieutenant wants to ask his colonel's wife to dance at the Christmas ball, and he cannot tango. So he orders one of his soldiers to teach him. Two men end up dancing together night after night in a room where nobody will see them. Nikos Koutelidakis's 2011 film keeps this strange arrangement funny and dangerous at once: the chain of command, masculinity, touching in a place where touching is forbidden. Behind it stands the repressive order of the period, and everything inside the camp is shaped by it. Military duty and desire occupy the same scene.
