What The French Lieutenant's Woman Is About
A love story set in the Victorian period, told alongside the crew filming it and the affair between the two actors playing the leads. The double structure is an answer to the novel's irresolvable ending: two stories move towards two different conclusions. Karel Reisz makes the transitions abrupt and unannounced, so the viewer has to keep track of which layer they are in. Meryl Streep plays both parts and separates them through voice. The shot on the harbour wall is its signature.
