Night Must Fall

Danny takes a job in the house of an elderly, bedridden woman. He is cheerful, attentive and smiling; before long he has her trust and has settled into the household. Olivia, her niece, is both uneasy about him and unable to look away. Meanwhile word is going round the district about a woman who has gone missing. Karel Reisz's English film is adapted from Emlyn Williams' play of 1935, which had already been filmed once, in 1937. Albert Finney plays Danny and had a hand in producing the film as well. Rather than show violence, the telling stretches out the waiting. Mona Washbourne and Susan Hampshire are also in the cast. The tone is tight, enclosed and unsettling.
