The Club of Ugly Children

A new president comes to power and says he wants the country kept "clean", which includes how people look. Paul, who has sticking-out ears, and a few other children are taken on a surprise trip, but where they are taken is not an outing. Paul escapes, and the person who helps him is Sara, one of the children counted as "pretty". The two of them start an underground club. Jonathan Elbers's Dutch production was adapted from a children's book. Although it is a children's film, what it is about is plain: a government making the people it does not want invisible, and organising against that. The telling moves along in an adventure register without frightening anyone. Sem Hulsmann plays Paul and Maan de Steenwinkel plays Sara. In the end the children's rebellion turns into a movement.
