What Mysterious Island Is About
During the American Civil War a group of Union prisoners escape by hot air balloon, and a storm carries them helplessly out to an uninhabited island in the Pacific. The animals there have grown to enormous size, and behind that lie Captain Nemo and his experiments. Adapted from the Jules Verne novel, the creatures are brought to life by Ray Harryhausen’s stop motion work, with a score by Bernard Herrmann. Between those two the adventure has held up remarkably well.
