What The Underworld Story Is About
Mike Reese, a reporter thrown out of a big paper, buys into a small-town one. Soon there is a murder in the town, and a young woman who works in the house is named as the suspect. Reese sees that the case will sell and starts working it. Then he realises the woman is not guilty. Cy Endfield's noir is direct about the power of the press to manufacture a lynching and about how the rich steer it. Dan Duryea plays the reporter. Not long after this film Endfield was blacklisted in America and had to move to Britain. What the film says about racism and class is unusually plain for its period.
