What The Cockleshell Heroes Is About
December 1942. German ships sit safely upriver in the port of Bordeaux. The British cannot send a fleet there, so they try something else: a handful of Royal Marines will paddle canoes up the river and fix limpet mines to the hulls. First the training, then the paddling in the dark. José Ferrer's 1955 film comes from a real operation, and very few of the twelve men who set out came back. It plays the training section as light service comedy and then changes tone completely. Ferrer directs and acts in it, with Trevor Howard opposite him. The heroic account and the cost of it sit in the same film.
