What The Conquest of Everest Is About
This 1953 documentary records the first expedition to reach the summit of Everest. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay stood on top on 29 May 1953, and the camera was with the party for the whole climb. The film has a story in its own making: when Tom Stobart, the expedition's cameraman, fell ill at the lower camps, George Lowe, Hillary's climbing partner, took over the camera and the direction fell to him. Some of this footage was therefore shot by someone who was inside the expedition itself. It was nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary and won a BAFTA.
