What The Contender Is About
A senator nominated for the vice presidency faces an allegation about her past and refuses to deny it. The idea is exactly there: does answering the question legitimise its being asked? Joan Allen plays the composure straight, and the composure is hard on the audience too, since you keep waiting for an explanation. Gary Oldman's opponent is not a caricature but a man with his own logic. Unlike most political dramas it declines to say that whoever wins was right. The ending is argued over, called too easy by some.
