What The Country Teacher Is About

Bohdan Sláma's film opens with Petr leaving his life in Prague to teach science in the countryside. The reason he left is clear: his relationships fell apart once it became known that he is gay, and he could not place himself anywhere afterwards. In the village he forms a close friendship with Marie, a widowed farmer, who in time falls in love with him, though he has no such interest in her. The hard part of the film is this: Petr's own attraction is to Lada, Marie's seventeen year old son. The film does not build that as a romantic line but as a dead end, and it does not avoid showing what follows. Pavel Liška and Zuzana Bydžovská lead.
