What The Dancer Upstairs Is About
In an unnamed Latin American country, minor officials are being murdered in the provinces, and in the capital dead dogs are strung from lampposts with slogans painted on them. Behind it is a revolutionary leader called Ezequiel whose face nobody has seen and whose followers treat him as a god. When the army answers with the same violence, the country goes into collective panic. The case goes to Agustin Rejas, a former lawyer now working as a police detective. While he follows the trail his own life comes apart: he is in love with his daughter's dance teacher, which is where the title comes from. The tension is built out of waiting rather than action. John Malkovich's first film as director, adapted from Nicholas Shakespeare's novel, with Javier Bardem in the lead.
