What The Dawn Patrol Is About
The First World War, a British fighter squadron in France. Dick Courtney, a pilot, openly attacks his commanding officer for sending untrained boys out to die every morning. Then the commander is relieved and Courtney is given the job. Sitting in the chair that issues the orders, he has to do the same arithmetic himself. Howard Hawks made this in 1930, in the first years of sound, and its aerial combat sequences set the standard for the period. Instead of heroism it describes what commanding costs: sending a man on a mission knowing you are sending him to die. Richard Barthelmess and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play it. It was remade in 1938.
