A note: this is the 2015 remake of the celebrated 1972 Soviet film, both taken from Boris Vasilyev's novella. Far behind the front line, at a railway junction nobody thinks about, Sergeant Vaskov commands five young anti-aircraft gunners. All five are women and none has fought before. The German unit dropping into the forest is trained, experienced and entirely serious. What looks like a skirmish of no consequence is in fact a handful of people standing over the country's main supply route. Davletyarov trades the original's cold weight for something softer and more painterly.
