What The Day I Was Not Born Is About
Florian Cossen's 2010 film follows Maria, thirty, waiting for a connecting flight to Chile during a stopover in Buenos Aires. A lullaby she overhears at the airport knocks her off her footing: she does not speak a word of Spanish, yet she remembers the words. She misses the flight and starts walking through a city she does not know. From there the story connects to the years of Argentina's military dictatorship and to the children of the disappeared who were handed to other families, a search that is still going on in the country today. The film keeps out of news language and moves through one person's memory. Jessica Schwarz plays Maria. It shared the audience award in Montreal and took the Fipresci prize.
