What The Day of the Beast Is About
A Catholic priest concludes that the Antichrist will be born in Madrid on Christmas night. To find him, he believes he must commit as many sins as possible. He recruits a metal record shop clerk and a television psychic. The film turns religious dread wholly into comedy; the narrative uses Madrid as it was at the end of the nineteen-nineties, all billboards and half-built towers. Alex de la Iglesia directed. It swept the Goya awards in Spain and made his name. Who it's for: those who like Spanish cinema that folds horror into black comedy. Who it's not for: viewers who will find jokes about religion uncomfortable; the film uses them throughout.
