What The Dead Don't Hurt Is About
In the 1860s, the fiercely independent French Canadian Vivienne Le Coudy tries to build a life with the Danish immigrant Holger Olsen in the dusty Nevada town of Elk Flats. When Holger goes off to fight for the Union in the Civil War, Vivienne is left on her own in a town run by a corrupt mayor. Viggo Mortensen’s second film as director constructs the western around the woman rather than the man, and tells it by sliding back and forth in time. Vicky Krieps plays Vivienne, with Mortensen as Holger.
