What The Debt Collector Is About
Nickie Dryden was once a debt collector who terrified Edinburgh, went to prison for murder, and came out to rebuild himself as a bestselling writer and sculptor. Gary Keltie, the policeman who put him away, has no intention of accepting the new life and will not let it go. Anthony Neilson’s first film as writer and director is built on forgiveness, revenge, change and the macho culture of modern urban Scotland. The story leans openly on the life of Jimmy Boyle, the Glasgow gangland killer who became an artist, though the film never acknowledges the debt. It is set in Edinburgh but most of it was shot in Glasgow, a condition of the Glasgow Film Fund money. Billy Connolly and Ken Stott play the two men.
