What The Designated Victim Is About
Stefano Augenti is a successful advertising man whose marriage is long over; his wife, however, will not agree to a divorce. While he is in Venice he meets an odd man called Count Matteo Tiepolo. The man puts a proposal to him: each of them should carry the other's burden. Stefano does not take it seriously. Tiepolo has. Maurizio Lucidi's Italian thriller openly uses the pattern of Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train and moves it to Venice. Tomas Milian and Pierre Clémenti take the leads. The city is shot not as a tourist sight but empty and damp. The telling leaves who did what unclear for a long stretch. The tone is cold and the pace slow for an Italian thriller of the period.
