What The Dog of Flanders Is About
Yoshio Kuroda's 1997 animated film is adapted from Ouida's 1872 novel and built on Nippon Animation's 1975 series. Nello, an orphan in a small village near Antwerp, lives with his grandfather Jehan and his dog Patrasche and gets by delivering milk, while what he actually wants is to draw. When he decides to enter an art competition he runs into the hardness of the villagers. Kuroda worked with Belgian cultural officials on the adaptation, trying to keep the places and the period as accurate as he could. A story watched by generation after generation in Japan and known for its sadness.
