The Door-to-Door Bookstore

The Chau Ngo's 2024 German film adapts Carsten Henn's novel. Carl's life runs like clockwork: every day he goes door to door delivering books to a handful of loyal customers, knowing each of their tastes and taking pride in choosing the right story. That order is upended by Schascha, a cheerful nine-year-old who starts following him. The template, the elderly recluse and the stubborn child, is familiar, but the film's texture keeps it from becoming emotional exploitation. Christoph Maria Herbst is known in Germany for comedy and does the opposite here: a fragile man who barely speaks. What the film says about bookselling and the love of books is too romantic and never touches the economic reality of reading culture. Against that, the naturalness of the young Yuna Bennett restores the balance. Who it's for: viewers who like warm European family films and stories built around books. Who it's not for: anyone bothered by how predictable the emotional resolution is, or arriving unprepared for content about loss and grief.
