What The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson Is About
Leah Purcell's 2021 Australian film rewrites Henry Lawson's short story of 1892. Purcell carried the text first to the stage, then to a novel, then to the screen, and each time added what was not there: Molly Johnson's own past and the mark of colonial violence on this family. Living alone and pregnant in the Snowy Mountains in 1893, Molly encounters a wounded Aboriginal fugitive, and the bond formed between them changes what she knows about her own identity. The film is built as a western while inverting the genre's heroic template. Purcell directs and takes the lead. The story at times carries too much and the closing section is rushed. Who it's for: viewers who like revisionist westerns and films reckoning with colonial history. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding domestic and sexual violence, or expecting a classic western.
