What The Dybbuk Is About
The film is set in a Polish shtetl. Two young men grew up together. They make a pledge between them. They will betroth the children not yet born to them. A traveller they meet warns them against it. He says the lives of coming generations must not be pledged. Neither of them listens to the warning. Before long one of them dies. The other man’s wife dies in childbirth. The children grow up in different towns. Neither of them knows about the pledge. But years later their paths cross. The young woman is Leah and the young man is Channon. Leah has been promised to somebody else. Channon studies the hidden arts. He tries to win her by that road.
