What The Edge of the Blade Is About
The Edge of the Blade (French title Une affaire d'honneur) is based on a real historical figure: Marie-Rose Astié de Valsayre, a feminist activist who had served as a nurse in the Franco-Prussian War and studied medicine; her most famous episode was a duel she fought and won in 1886 over an argument about whether French or American women doctors were superior, and in 1887 she campaigned against a law banning women from wearing trousers. The film's research drew on Adolphe Eugène Tavernier's 1886 book L'Art du duel; the real detail that newspapers kept their own fencing salons to train reporters for duels is accurate. Who it's for: anyone curious about a period drama based on a real feminist duelist, including the real detail that era's newspapers trained reporters to duel. Who it's not for: viewers wanting the real figure centered as the main character, since some critics say the film reduces the real Astié to a fictional side character.
