What The Eight Mountains Is About
Adapted from Paolo Cognetti's novel, written and directed together by Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix van Groeningen. Pietro is a city boy from Turin who spends his summers with his family in an Alpine village. Bruno is the only child still living there, herding cattle. A friendship forms, and the film follows it for thirty years: separations, long silences, Pietro's relationship with his father, and a stone house the two of them build together high on the mountain. It was shot in 4:3. That is an odd choice for a mountain film: a wide frame would embrace the landscape, and the narrow one does the opposite, pressing the people into the mountain. Luca Marinelli plays Pietro and Alessandro Borghi plays Bruno. It won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2022 and runs close to two and a half hours. Slow, quiet and trusting of its landscape. An important work for anyone who likes drama about male friendship and fatherhood; for anyone wanting incident, the years pass silently and nothing accelerates.
