What The Eleventh Chapter Is About
A murder committed thirty years ago comes back into view, because a theatre company is putting the case on stage and the man the play shows as the killer is alive. He struggles to clear his name, but what he faces is not a court, it is a stage. Everyone watches the play and everyone arrives at a verdict of their own. Chen Jianbin, who both directs and acts in it, builds the film in chapters, and in each one the same event looks slightly different. The subject is less the murder itself than who tells the story and what that telling does to a person. Zhou Xun is in the cast as well. The telling moves between comedy and tragedy; even where it is funny an injustice sits underneath.
