What A Fool Is About

Chen Jianbin's 2015 first film as a director is adapted from a novel by Hu Xuewen. It follows a poor goat farmer in northwestern China whose son is in prison, played by Chen himself. One day a young man with a mental disability starts following him home and he cannot get rid of him. The reluctant kindness he shows brings a procession of grifters and opportunists to his door. The film plays China's class divide, and the cost of helping anyone at all, as dark comedy. Chen took both best actor and best new director at the Golden Horse Awards for it. Its domestic release was pulled after one of the cast was arrested.
