What The Enchanting Shadow Is About
A young scholar spends the night in a deserted temple said to be haunted. He does not believe the rumours, and after running into a Taoist swordsman he meets a beautiful woman who is a ghost. She has been forced by an old demon to lure men, but this time she falls in love herself and refuses to do what she is made to do. Li Han-hsiang’s eighty three minute Shaw Brothers production is based on Nie Xiaoqian, one of the Liaozhai tales by Pu Songling, and it opened on 17 August 1960. It went to the Cannes Film Festival the same year and became the first Hong Kong colour film shown at an international festival. Betty Loh Ti and Zhao Lei star.
