What The End of the Affair Is About
London in the forties. Maurice Bendrix, a writer recently out of the army, falls in love with Sarah Miles while interviewing her for a book. Sarah is married, but neither of them can hold back and an affair runs for months. Then it ends abruptly. Maurice puts it down to jealousy and to the war; the reason turns out to be something else. Edward Dmytryk adapted the film from Graham Greene's novel and did not skip the hardest part of the book, the question of faith. It starts like a story about infidelity and turns into one about what a person does with a promise they made. Deborah Kerr's Sarah carries the film; Van Johnson plays the writer and John Mills a key supporting part. London under the Blitz is not a backdrop but a direct part of the story.
