The End Will Be Spectacular

Zilan returns to her home town looking for traces of the brother killed by ISIS. The town is not what she left: the tension has become open fighting, there are barricades in the streets, and security forces are facing armed groups. Caught inside a siege that runs more than a hundred days, she decides not to remain a bystander. The film depicts the period of the curfews declared at the end of 2015 in the Sur district of Diyarbakir and other districts. It was made by the Rojava Film Commune and shot in northern Syria, and it tells the events entirely from one side, that of the Kurdish groups doing the fighting; it says it is built on the diaries of those who died. Much of those districts was destroyed in that period and tens of thousands were displaced; the parties blamed each other over the casualties and the responsibility. Turkey designates the PKK a terrorist organisation, as do the United States and the European Union. The film was never released in Turkey and was pulled from the programme of a festival in Sulaymaniyah.
