What The Endurance Is About
August 1914. Ernest Shackleton sets out on a ship called Endurance to cross Antarctica on foot. He never reaches the continent: the ship is caught in the ice of the Weddell Sea, drifts for months, and is crushed. Twenty-eight men are left on the ice. Shackleton first gets them to Elephant Island, then takes five men in a seven-metre boat across thirteen hundred kilometres of open ocean to South Georgia. They cross the island on foot to reach a whaling station. After four attempts he goes back for the others. It takes two years, and nobody dies. George Butler's documentary is built on the actual photographs and film Frank Hurley shot on the expedition. Liam Neeson narrates. Ninety-seven minutes.
