What The Family Friend Is About
An old man running a moneylending business in a small town is merciless with his debtors and considers himself everybody's friend. A family asking for a loan for a wedding draws his interest. The film never makes him likeable and the narrative does not stop watching him either; loneliness and repulsiveness sit side by side. The design is yellow and stifling and the locations are chosen deliberately ugly. Paolo Sorrentino wrote and directed, with Giacomo Rizzo in the lead. A real warning: there is an old man's coercion of a young woman and scenes close to sexual abuse. The narrative does not endorse it and produces the discomfort deliberately.
