The documentary tells the daily life of a state prison in Louisiana, largely from the point of view of the prisoners. The institution was once a farm and the order of work in the fields continues today; because the sentences are so long, most of those who come in spend the rest of their lives here. The film speaks with several prisoners, among them a man serving a life sentence whose death is near. The account neither clears anyone nor makes a spectacle by recounting crimes; its question is what kind of life a person builds in the place where they are shut in. Jonathan Stack and Liz Garbus’s eighty eight minute American documentary was completed in 1998.
