What The Fearless Freaks Is About
The Flaming Lips came out of Oklahoma City at the end of the eighties and turned from a noise band imitating the Butthole Surfers into a group making orchestral pop. Bradley Beesley lived in the same neighbourhood as the singer Wayne Coyne and started filming the concerts, the rehearsals and everything else early on. The film was assembled from four hundred hours of material, a decade of home movies, interviews, videos and live shows. The early footage is funny, but the weight of the film is elsewhere: the conversations with family and friends open up how hard the childhoods were, and Steven Drozd’s heroin addiction is there on camera, undecorated.
