The Final Journey

After his wife dies, Eduard, ninety-two, decides to set out from Berlin for Ukraine. He is looking for a woman he left behind there when he was a young German officer. His daughter is against the idea and sends her own daughter to the station to stop him. The granddaughter does not miss the train; she misses getting off it, and the journey carries on with the two of them. Jürgen Prochnow plays the grandfather and Petra Schmidt-Schaller the granddaughter in Nick Baker-Monteys's film. As the journey goes on, what the grandfather did during the war and his dealings with the Cossacks come open; the granddaughter does not like the answers to her questions. The film was shot in Ukraine at the time of the annexation of Crimea, and the tension of those days enters the telling.
