What The First on the List Is About
1 June 1970, Pisa. The city is one of the centres of the far-left Lotta Continua movement, word from Rome has a coup coming, and the movement’s most visible figures are afraid of being arrested before dawn. One of them is Pino Masi, the singer who wrote La ballata del Pinelli. He takes two schoolboys, Renzo Lulli and Fabio Gismondi, and decides to get out of the country. The journey proceeds entirely through misunderstandings, beginning with an unnerving encounter with soldiers heading to Rome for the national holiday the next day. Roan Johnson’s film is based on what actually happened, and the screenplay was written by Renzo Lulli, one of the people it happened to. It screened at the Rome Film Festival in 2011.
