What The Five Pennies Is About
Red Nichols is a cornet player who comes to New York from the provinces and has trouble getting his sound accepted. In time he puts together his own band and becomes known. He marries, they have a daughter, and things are going well. Then the girl contracts polio. Nichols gives up his career to stay with his daughter. Melville Shavelson's film rests on the life of a musician who really existed; Red Nichols was one of the known names of the jazz scene of the 1920s. Danny Kaye plays him, and the cornet playing is Nichols's own. Louis Armstrong appears in the film under his own name and performs alongside Kaye. The film picked up several Oscar nominations.
