What The Forgiveness of Blood Is About
A village in northern Albania. Nik is seventeen, still at school, and planning to open an internet café; his sister Rudina is doing well in her studies. During a dispute over land their father is accused of killing a neighbour. With that, the family falls under the rules of the Kanun: a blood feud is declared, and the men of the house can be killed if they step outside. Nik cannot leave the house for months. Rudina drops out of school and starts driving her father's bread cart. Two children's lives stop because of something they had no part in. Joshua Marston directs, in Albanian, with a largely non-professional cast. A hundred and nine minutes. It won the prize for best screenplay at Berlin in 2011.
