What The Gaucho Is About

In the Argentine Andes a girl falls from a cliff. She survives. What happened is taken for a miracle. She is held to have the power to heal. A shrine is built where she fell. In time a city grows around it. Those who come leave gold behind. The city grows rich on it. Then General Ruiz takes the city. He seizes the gold and closes the shrine. Up in the hills there is a band of outlaws. The man at their head is called the Gaucho. The Gaucho comes down to the city. There is an illness in the film as well, which the titles call the Black Doom. Mary Pickford appears briefly, in a scene shot in colour. Douglas Fairbanks and Lupe Vélez appear in the ninety five minute silent film, an American production F. Richard Jones finished in 1927.
