During the Second World War a carefully picked American unit took on a strange assignment: to put on a travelling show of deception across the battlefields of Europe with the German army as its audience. Using inflatable rubber tanks, sound trucks and staging, the twenty third Headquarters Special Troops fooled the enemy again and again, and often right on the front line. Most of the men chosen for the work were artists, and in their spare time they drew and painted the war. The mission was kept secret for nearly fifty years after the war ended. The deception was carried out at the front not with weapons but with materials and sound, so the unit’s work was both a military assignment and a job of staging. Rick Beyer’s sixty eight minute American documentary was completed in 2013.
