What The Girl with the Red Hair Is About
Hannie Schaft, a law student, leaves her studies shortly before her final examination and joins the Dutch resistance. The film opens with her death; her life, the people she loved and the things she meant to do are reconstructed through what her closest friend remembers. The death of Hugo, whom she was close to, in a failed action breaks her, and afterwards she goes after the collaborators. The film was adapted from a novel by Theun de Vries, and the colour was drained from the image almost entirely by a special process, which gives it a cold, uneasy quality. Renee Soutendijk plays the lead in Ben Verbong’s hundred and ten minute Dutch film, completed in 1981.
