What The Given Word Is About
Zé is a poor farmer whose only possession is his donkey. When the animal falls fatally ill he makes a promise: if it recovers, he will carry a cross on his back, like Jesus, to the church of Santa Bárbara in Salvador. The donkey recovers and Zé sets out. At the church the priest refuses to let the cross in, having learned that the promise was made at a place of Afro-Brazilian worship. One simple man's stubbornness turns into an affair involving journalists, politicians and the church. Anselmo Duarte's film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1962.
