In the future, East and West have disbanded their armies and given up nuclear weapons. To settle their differences they instead put teams of picked soldiers against each other in an enclosed arena; it is called the Peace Games, and it is a television programme breaking viewing records. Peter Watkins made the film in Sweden after he had had enough of the pressure in Britain, immediately after 1968. It is about war turned into spectacle, and it describes today’s survival contests half a century in advance.
