What The God of Cookery Is About
The God of Cookery played by Stephen Chow is in fact a brand built entirely on marketing by a man who cannot cook. When his partner brings him down and takes his place he ends up on the street, and there he actually learns to cook, inventing a dish called sorrowful rice and entering the contest to win his title back. Lee Lik-chi and Chow directed it together. The humour comes from the Hong Kong tradition of nonsense of the period and the cooking contest is shot entirely as a martial arts film: cooking here is kung fu. It laughs at real food culture and at the manufacture of brands at once. It directly influenced later films about food. Who it is for: viewers who like Hong Kong comedy and Stephen Chow.
