What The Godless Girl Is About
At an American high school Judy has founded an atheist student club and is recruiting members. Bob, the class president, gathers the religious students and breaks up one of its meetings; the fight that follows brings down a staircase and a girl is killed. Judy and Bob are held responsible and sent to a reform school, and the real account begins there: the harshness of the guards, the system of punishment applied to the young inmates and the two of them drawing closer. Cecil B. DeMille’s hundred and nineteen minute American film started from a newspaper story and turned out to be his last silent film. Lina Basquette plays Judy and Tom Keene plays Bob; it was completed in 1928.
