What The Gold Seekers Is About
Tana Schémbori's 2017 Paraguayan film follows Manu, who sells newspapers in the Chacarita district of Asunción. An old map left by his grandfather comes into his hands and Manu sets off after the buried treasure known as Plata Yvyguy. The legend has a real source: during the War of the Triple Alliance of 1864 to 1870, families buried their gold and jewellery. That war destroyed a very large part of Paraguay's population and remains an open wound in the country. The film turns that heavy ground into an adventure comedy. It is one of the few Paraguayan films to reach a wide audience.
